National Eye Centre, Kaduna has carried out its first ever Ahmed Glaucoma Valve Implant (AGV). This was disclosed by Dr. Olusegun Olaniyi, a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Head of Glaucoma Department in Centre and the first eye surgeon to be trained and certified to do the AGV procedure in the Northern part of the country.

According to Dr. Olaniyi, who did the surgery on a patient named Shehu Bello, the AGV is an improvement on the previous Trabectomy surgery, as it produces better outcome.

Mr. Bello who is a resident of Kaduna was very pleased with the outcome of the surgery. He told NEC news that he is enjoying better vision in comparison to the vision he had from previous surgeries. He advised Nigerians to always check their eyes periodically to avert loss of their vision.

A glaucoma valve like AGV is a medical shunt used in the treatment of glaucoma to reduce the eye’s intraocular pressure (IOP). It is named Ahmed Glaucoma Valve Implant after Dr. A. Mateen Ahmed who invented the AGV in 1993.
